Are you a Hedohumanic?
هل أنت هيدوهيومانكي ؟
You might, without realizing it, already be a Hedohumanic. Then again, you might not- which would really be too bad, because it’s a great group of people to belong to. If you are, welcome to the Punctured Container!
A Hedohumanic has a unique blend of compassion and sense of responsible global citizenship mixed in with a passion for living a full life, unafraid of indulging in its pleasures.
Hedohumanic is a neologism – a made-up word. I created it to represent a breed of people that I would like to surround myself with, to interact with in this blog and outside of it, to have discussions and travel with, and to consolidate for action.
Hedohumanic was created by merging two words: Hedonism and Humanist. Manic hints to the non-conformism that characterises this breed. So let us explore a little more each of the two main aspects that make up Hedohumanics…
Hedonism, according to Merriam-Webster, is the belief that pleasure or happiness is the most important goal in life.
Hedonism is typically associated with things like great food, even greater drinking, wild sex, and various narcotics. Good stuff! This blog will never attempt to judge anyone who engages in any of these activities…in fact, in some instances it even strongly encourages such engagement. We only hope though that it is done with a sense of adult responsibility, such that one is in control of these pleasures rather than being controlled by them.
But I would like to propose that besides the above (some of which might be optional) some people, Hedohumanics, also derive pleasure and happiness from other sources. These can be things like intellectual conversations, meaningful human connections, activities that connect you with nature, trips and travel that engage all your senses…in short, meaningful and intense human experiences. And very importantly, these can also include activities, even small ones, individually or in a group, where you engage in helping someone or a community in a meaningful manner that somehow improves someone’s life.
And that’s where the humanist part of the equation comes in. Regardless of how officially the word humanist is defined, I guess you get the point that is intended here: a general sense of compassion, empathy, consideration, responsibility, and concern for fellow humans anywhere, and for the planet and the environment.
But let’s not make a mistake: a Hedohumanic is both of those things, not one of them only. He or she cannot have a love for worldly pleasures but be completely unconcerned with human and environmental affairs, no matter if at the scale of one’s own community or of the entire planet. At the same time, one is not a Hedohumanic if he or she has compassion, but does not have the passion to enjoy and appreciate– responsibly – some or all of the pleasures that life has to offer.
In other blog posts, I will explore more the values that Hedohumanics live by and the characteristics that define them, as well as why I created this blog, but for now I hope the idea is beginning to be clear.
So are you a Hedohumanic? Or do you have secret, dark, hidden fantasies to become one? If so, please visit this blog regularly and interact, so we build a tribe. Even better, please sign up to get reminders every once in a while to visit again, or to be informed when activities or trips are being planned to get Hedohumanics physically together.
Let’s make this world a better place, one pleasure at a time!
I am definately hedohumanic, and it’s great to know that people like us can be labeled positively.
😉 I know you are
Always knew you would create your own cult. At least we have one word to describe our dear friend now. I’m furthest from being “Hedo” , or at least your definition of it, but I always get a kick out peeking into your head. So can’t/won’t join, but will support by reading/lurking .
Thank you for the morning laugh..I like the idea of the cult And thank you for your support, even if passive. However I would like to know who you are, as the email did not give me any information. Please let me know by email (zee@hedohumanic.com), FB, whatsapp, etc..as I’m very curious to know why you would think you’re furthest from being a hedohumanic
Now that you guessed, you know that I can be Humanic, but only partly Hedo (food bit, and maybe intellectual conversation, if close enough ) Happy to make you laugh as you have an amazingly toxic one that lights up the darkest of spaces/times.
Thank you. And it seems I need a slight edit of this post to clarify the idea…we can’t have you be only half way in :))
This term definitely has to grow and spread out. Ziad, why isn’t this on Wikipedia and other encyclopedia databases
great idea..I should do that, as it definitely needs to spread out. Or maybe you can do it for me?
I’ll look into it
Zee.. what a great idea. There is definitely a common thread that draws me to others of a similar ilk. Thanks for putting a word to it. Love this and look forward to seeing the circle grow.
hello hello Nina So glad you’re on board, but no surprise… please help me spread the word, I really would like this to include people from all over! Thank you
Thumbs up! Congratulations Ziad for this enlighting idea. A very interesting blog and can’t wait for the tribe to grow.
I’m definitely a HedoHumanic and would love to share ideas and contribute here. Peace
I think you fit the profile.. welcome to the Punctured Container :))
Thank you for your efforts in building HedoHumanics tribe. It’s amazing and exciting idea and thoughts, I loved it enormously.
Yes, Since HedoHumanics pursue happiness and pleasure and they are eager to give them to others. They deserve to get close from each other. HedoHumanics in a such tribe, in my preview, will be able to achieve a bigger amount of pleasure and happiness and they would be able to help others more effectively to make them happy.
I claim I’m HedoHumanic and it would be a great pleasure for me to be a member in the this tribe and to get close from other HedoHumanics. 😉
Thank you for the great feedback! Welcome to the Container 😉
